Development of a transport model

13.15
From 2013 to 2016
TML developed an integrated model that analyses both transport economic and traffic effects of mobility measures, allowing a more complete and accurate assessment. This model is suitable for applications such as transport forecasts, cost-benefit analyses, and traffic and environmental policies.

The aim of this project was to develop a model that can describe both transport economic and traffic effects of mobility measures. Not only the impact on traffic flow, but also the impact on the number of trips, origin and destination choice, departure time choice, transport mode choice, and route choice are taken into account. Combining both elements allows integrated analyses that are superior to what is offered on the market today.

The combined traffic-economy-transportation modelling tool integrates transport-economy elements into the iterative process of the traffic model. The total number of trips is made conditional on the cost of travel. An origin-destination choice model and a departure time choice model are added to the iterative loop in the traffic engineering model.

There is a whole range of mobility issues where both traffic and transport economic effects are important. Following applications can be superiorly analysed with the envisaged integrated model:
  • Transport forecasts
  • Social cost-benefit analyses of transport infrastructure
  • Pricing policy
  • Parking policy
  • Environmental policy
  • Traffic management
  • Introduction of new vehicle types
  • Introduction of flexible working
