Ruben Corthout
ResearcherRuben Corthout trained as a civil engineer and obtained a doctorate in engineering sciences. He has been working at TML since 2012. He specialises in dynamic traffic simulations, designing intelligent traffic light control systems, and traffic management in multimodal networks. Ruben's work has included the development of macroscopic dynamic traffic models, the Antwerp traffic light coordination centre, and the redesign of the A12 motorway in Aartselaar.

Traffic light control systems: an overview
An overview of all traffic light control systems TML developed.

Metro North
TML conducts mobility studies and assists hyper-coordination in extending the high-performance public transport network to the north of Brussels.

Support MDVM
Dynamic traffic models capture travel times and traffic jams in a realistic manner and are therefore ideally suited for scenario analyses at local and regional level to support dynamic traffic management.

Traffic Scout
TML developed a simplified traffic model that uses Telraam data to analyse local mobility interventions in collaboration with citizens.

Cut-through traffic Leuven-East
TML, together with partners SBE, Antea, and DenS, is looking for solutions to the cut-through traffic problem in the eastern outskirts around Leuven.

Design of road traffic management system Albania
TML collaborated on the development of a traffic management system for Albania.

MOMENTUM
TML developed a toolkit for modelling emerging transport modes and technologies.

Actualisation strategic traffic model StraVeM
TML surveyed the strategic traffic model StraVeM.
StraVeM calibration tests
TML supports the province of Utrecht with research questions and practice tests to refine model analyses.

Management system for the traffic lights in Antwerp
We collaborated on the development and implementation of an innovative traffic management and control strategy.

OptiRoutS
This project used a combination of classical traffic models and artificial intelligence to develop a predictive model for real-time traffic situations.

MODUM
TML co-developed models to optimise dynamic urban mobility.

HIGH-TOOL (high-level strategic transport model)
The HIGH-TOOL project resulted in an open source, high-level strategic assessment model for use by EU policy makers and policy analysts to assess economic, social, and environmental impacts of transport policy measures.

Traffic engineering support for the construction of the Oosterweel Connection
TML is one of the mobility advisers for Lantis.

Plan-MER A102/R11bis
We elaborated the Mobility discipline in the plan EIA for the Antwerp tangents A102/R11bis.
Development of a transport model
We collaborated on the development of a combined traffic engineering-transport economic model.

Bodart Square Leuven
TML collaborated on the integrated design of the Koning Boudewijnlaan - Leuven Ring Road intersection.

Master plan Izegem
TML supported the development of an integrated master plan for the city of Izegem.

Dynamic Traffic Model Antwerp
TML collaborated on a macroscopic dynamic traffic model (MDVM) for Antwerp.

Oudenaarde Santenssite
We collaborated on the urban masterplan for the former Santens site in Oudenaarde

Construction macroscopic dynamic traffic model Vlaamse Rand
We collaborated on a macroscopic dynamic traffic model for the Brussels region.

Microscopic traffic simulation Leuven Ringroad
TML is conducting a traffic study (microsimulation) of the Ring around Leuven (R23).

Traffic Management System city of Leuven
TML conducted a technical and traffic engineering study for a traffic control system in Leuven.

Smart Traffic Network Control Antwerp
What does a smart grid scheme for the city of Antwerp look like?

Blauwe Boulevard Hasselt
TML provided the analysis and layout of the traffic light control system on the Slachthuiskaai in Hasselt.

Redesigning the A12 as a primary road
As part of Team A12, TML studies the redesign of the A12 to improve safety and traffic flow for all road users.

Mobility study for Science Park Campus Diepenbeek
TML conducted a microsimulation and studied the optimisation of future access variants for campus Diepenbeek.

Microsimulations Hasselt
TML used a microsimulation model to investigate new intersection designs on Kempische Steenweg (N74) and circulation measures on the Ring Road around Hasselt (R71).

Mobility modelling for Namur and Eupen
TML participated in the development and application of four-step traffic models for the cities of Namur and Eupen.

Data processing intersection detectors Antwerp
TML processed and presented detections from loop detectors at Antwerp intersections.

BiTiBi
Seamless energy efficient door-to-door transport through Bike-Train-Bike combination.

TML'ers have their say! #7
In this section we would like to introduce you to our colleagues at TML. This way you get to know us a little better and discover what everyone within TML is doing. Recently we had a conversation with Ruben, Rodric, and Evelyn!
