TML is investigating the potential for pallet transport via inland waterways in Belgium and the applicability of the Dutch project Distrivaart. This project focuses on designing a hub network for more efficient transport of fast moving consumer goods.

This exploratory study looks at the possibilities of transporting pallets via inland waterways. The study examines whether the Distrivaart project, following the example of the Netherlands, has a future in Belgium. The concept in the Netherlands was developed by TNO Inro for Nederland Distributieland (NDL), among others. Distrivaart is one of the spearhead themes of the Flemish Institute for Logistics, a knowledge institute to strengthen and support the logistics sector.

The Dutch project Distrivaart Netwerkontwikkeling focused on the design of a hub network for inland shipping. This network, which focuses on the transport of fast-moving consumer goods, allows for economies of scale by bundling flows of multiple producers and supermarket chains. Participants in the project included Albert Heijn, Schuitema, Heineken, Interbrew, Grolsch, Bavaria, Unilever, Coca-Cola, and Kimberly-Clark.
