Refurbishment of police site Groendreef Ghent

19071

TML thoroughly analysed the federal police site in Groendreef in Ghent and developed a master plan to better integrate the site into the neighbourhood and city, with attention to mobility and traffic safety. The plan explores options for preserving and repurposing existing buildings rather than opting exclusively for demolition and new construction.

The federal police site located in the Groendreef in Ghent has gone through many changes in its 150-year history and faced another major transformation in recent years. The current buildings no longer met modern comfort requirements and their scattered arrangement hampered efficient operation. The arrival of the local police offered opportunities to better integrate the site into the neighbourhood and the city.

We thoroughly analysed the existing site, examined different scenarios, and developed a preferred scenario into a master plan. This plan ensures proper integration into the neighbourhood and city, exploits development opportunities at the edges, and improves mobility on and around the site. We determined the best locations for entrances and exits and ensured traffic safety on the site and in the neighbourhood. The phasing and implementation of the plan were worked out in a sustainable way, where we did not opt a priori for demolition and new construction but examined the possibilities of giving the existing patrimony - such as the historic Filature Du Nord - a new function.
