TML examined traffic management systems for trans-Alpine freight traffic, aiming to improve efficiency and environmental and safety situations, and evaluated the limits, conditions, and expected outcomes of different systems.


Finding a solution to the problems of trans-Alpine freight traffic is one of the biggest challenges of European transport policy.


This study explored traffic management systems for trans-Alpine road transport. Such systems combining economic and regulatory measures lead to overall improvements in efficiency and environmental and safety situations.

This study identified and assessed different traffic management systems to show their limits, prerequisites, and expected results. The potential improvements in efficiency on diversions traffic, congestion, safety problems, emissions, etc. were also studied.
