The VIEWLS project shows that the introduction of biofuels can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 50-90%. TML was one of the project partners and investigated the cost of transporting biofuels from eastern to western Europe.

The introduction of biofuels can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 30 - 50% compared to fossil fuels. With the new generation of biofuels, this reduction potential rises to 50 - 90%. Moreover, at current high oil prices, biofuels can be grown competitively in Europe, provided that Eastern European agriculture undergoes the necessary adjustments. The production of significant amounts of biomass in Europe is possible without jeopardising food and timber production. These are the main results of the EU co-funded VIEWLS project.

The research project was led by the Dutch SenterNovem. Transport & Mobility Leuven was one of the project partners. We investigated the cost aspects of transporting biofuels from Eastern to Western Europe.
