METHOD developed a people-centred approach to traffic management to help road authorities take measures that improve both traffic flow and safety. TML analysed existing measures and presented a manual with recommendations for more effective and safer traffic management.

The aim of the METHOD project was to develop a human-centred view of traffic management measures. This allows road managers to implement adapted measures that enable higher throughput and traffic safety.

In this context, METHOD used various methods to analyse existing measures, but also to test new concepts in the field of behavioural change (cf. serious gaming and in-vehicle traffic management).

TML was partly responsible for the analysis of existing traffic management measures. This analysis painted a more accurate picture of the effectiveness of such measures from a human perspective. With this, traffic management can be used in a better and safer way for mobility support. The main findings were presented to CEDR in the form of an easy-to-use manual (booklet). This manual is intended for the various stakeholders involved in traffic management. The main findings are as follows:
  • Treat road users as individuals rather than homogeneous groups. This can be done, for example, by providing targeted information for road users, taking into account their (travel) motives.
  • Use emerging (communication) services to offer more personalised information.
  • Improve cooperation between different levels of traffic management.
