Urban Renewal Lokeren Railway Station Area

From 2015 to 2017
The city of Lokeren is improving the station environment with a focus on park area and parking issues, addressing challenges such as the connection between the front and back of the station and accessibility from the N70. TML supported Palmbout Urban Landscapes in the traffic engineering aspects and parking concept.
The city of Lokeren wants to work on a better development of the station area, respecting the park area and taking into account the parking issue. There are a number of important challenges, including the connection between the front and back of the station and the accessibility of the station from the N70. A master plan for the station area was already drawn up in 2011 in collaboration with Infrabel and EIS, both of which have land positions in this project area. This study updated and deepened this master plan.
TML supported Palmbout Urban Landscapes with the elaboration of the traffic aspects. This elaboration was fully integrated into the design process and was done with great attention to a multimodal traffic organisation, so that the station area can become more than just an interchange. Our task consisted of two parts. First, the parking concept was worked out within Lokeren's overall parking strategy. The question here was where parking can be organised and how to organise a smart distribution between commuters and local parkers. We also investigated the development of a parking for commuters. Secondly, we sought an optimal balance between city space and traffic flow. Here, we paid attention to an alternative car access that preserves as much green space as possible in the station area.
