BiTiBi stands for Bike-Train-Bike and aims to improve the energy efficiency of EU transport by offering BiTiBi services: seamless door-to-door transport combining bike and train. The bicycle is by far the most energy-efficient mode of transport for short distances, while the train is for longer distances. A combination of both, using the bicycle for the first and/or last kilometre, is therefore always energy efficient.
Within this project, we repeated the successful Dutch BiTiBi approach in other cities to attract new users for the bicycle-train combination.
This approach consists of five building blocks:
For this project, we repeated the Dutch BiTiBi success story in the UK (Liverpool and surroundings), Belgium (Ghent and Liège), Spain (Barcelona and surroundings), and Italy (Milan region). Various stakeholders were involved, including railway companies, cities, organisations of (potential) users, and major employers in the vicinity of the station. We also provided guidelines of the BiTiBi concept for implementation in other countries and regions.
This project was funded under IEE-STEER. TML was project leader.
