Comparative study aviation sector - international rail transport

23079

The Bond Beter Leefmilieu commissioned a study on the aviation sector and international rail transport, focusing on environmental impacts, subsidies, ticket prices, and accessibility. Here, TML analysed environmental impacts at the Belgian level and for specific destinations, costs and accessibility for travellers, and relevant government measures, focusing on destinations where rail and air can be realistic alternatives to each other.

The Bond Beter Leefmilieu (BBL) commissioned a comparative study of the aviation sector and international rail transport. This study focused on several aspects, including environmental impact, subsidies, ticket prices, and accessibility for all travellers. The aim was to make a trade-off between international rail transport and aviation in these areas, both at the macro level and for some popular foreign destinations.

TML examined four subtopics:
  • Environmental impacts of aviation and rail at the Belgian level
  • Environmental impacts of rail and air travel to a selection of popular destinations
  • Costs for travellers and accessibility
  • Government measures

The research concentrated on two main points. First, we studied air travel and international rail travel, both within Belgium and for destinations accessible from Belgium within a certain timeframe. These are destinations where the time difference between a plane trip or train ride is limited and the two modes of transport can be an alternative to each other. Second, the focus was on passenger transport using these two modes of transport.
All conclusions can be found in the final Report.

Our analysis was based on publicly available data and existing reports. Where possible, data for different years were provided, otherwise the most recent data were used.
