Expert system for traffic data

From 2007 to 2009
TML helped the Traffic Centre with an expert system to improve the reliability of traffic data from census loops. With quality checks and reconstruction methodologies, corrected data were used to establish objective traffic indicators for Flanders.
Transport & Mobility Leuven supported the Flemish Government's Traffic Centre in the development of an expert system for traffic data. Traffic data generated daily by census loops in the road network are not 100% reliable, correct, and complete. Nevertheless, traffic indicators – which are used to map mobility and upon which policy decisions are based – are often generated based on this data. It is therefore crucial to ensure the availability of reliable source data.
For traffic data quality control, we first developed a series of tests that indicate whether the data are reliable or not. Data that are incomplete, unreliable, or incorrect are deleted and intelligently replaced in a second step. Several reconstruction methodologies were developed for this purpose. Finally, based on the corrected source data, traffic indicators were drawn up that map mobility in Flanders, as well as its evolution, in an objective manner.
