Impact Monitor – Horizon Europe

22006
From 2023 to 2025

The EU aims to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030 and be climate neutral by 2050, but the growth of air transport increases emissions. TML is developing an assessment framework and toolbox to evaluate and demonstrate the impacts of aviation research and innovation.

The European Union has set ambitious targets to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% from 1990 levels by 2030 and to become the first climate-neutral continent by 2050. Although aircraft energy efficiency has improved in recent decades, the growth of air transport has consistently outpaced these improvements, increasing greenhouse gas emissions. The aviation sector faces the challenge of developing and deploying safe, reliable, and affordable low-to-zero emission air transport.

The transition to climate neutrality will transform aviation. Research and innovation (R&I) in aviation will have a major impact on the speed at which the transition to climate neutrality can take place, with direct implications for associated costs, impacts and co-benefits such as improved air quality, increased employment, social inclusion, and reduced dependence on fossil fuels.

In this context, Impact Monitor aims to establish a coherent and holistic impact assessment framework and tools to assess the environmental, economic, and societal impacts of European aviation R&I.
In doing so, TML carries out the following two tasks in the project:
  1. Contribute to the design of the assessment framework and toolbox.
  2. Demonstrate the framework and toolbox for specific case studies.

Project reports will be published on the project website.
