Low Emission Zones
10.07
From 2010 to 2011
TML investigated whether establishing a low emission zone in urban centres can lead to an improvement in local air quality. The team investigated this question for Antwerp, Mechelen, and Leuven.
The effects of low emission zones were examined in terms of traffic flow redistribution, traffic emissions, and air quality. Concentrations and exposure per concentration class were determined using simulation models such as CAR-Vlaanderen and Pluim. The costs associated with the introduction of low emission zones were also studied, as were a number of flanking measures that could enhance the effectiveness of low emission zones.
