Study on the extension of the low emission zone in Ghent

20092
From 2020 to 2021
Together with VITO, TML examined the possibilities for expanding the low-emission zone in Ghent and its impact on the vehicle fleet, air quality, and health. TML formulated recommendations for the phasing of the expansion and supporting policies.

Since 1 January 2020, a low-emission zone (LEZ) has applied in the Ghent city centre.

In this study, together with VITO, we investigated the most suitable options for extending Ghent's current LEZ to a larger area. In addition, we calculated the effects of the expansion in terms of vehicle fleet cleaning, air quality, and health. Finally, we made recommendations for the phasing of the expansion and the accompanying policy, partly based on a parallel study of the existing LEZ.
