TML investigated the possibility of installing traffic lights at the intersection of Hazen- and Fazantendreef with Tremelobaan in Keerbergen to make the crossing safer for cyclists. The proposed design allows cyclists to request green light with a push button, significantly improving safety.
During school periods, many schoolchildren use Hazen- and Fazantendreef. At the intersection with Tremelobaan, however, there is no safe crossing for cyclists. Before and after school hours, the police often regulate traffic, but this is not always possible. Therefore, TML investigated the possibility of installing traffic lights to make the crossing safer.
As Hazen- and Fazantendreef are narrow, we did not want to attract extra motorised traffic on this cycle route. It was thus important that an improved crossing for cyclists did not also lead to an improved crossing for cars, which could attract traffic from surrounding streets. We factored this into the design of the traffic lights.
We examined the bicycle and public transport network, speeds, and traffic figures. With this information, we developed a design for the traffic lights, looking at the balance between safety and waiting times in different directions. In this design, traffic on Tremelobaan is stopped when cyclists request green light with a push button. This significantly improves safety.
