Train Scheduling: The Game

13.49
From 2015 to 2016
TML developed a simulation game for Infrabel that simulates planning problems and generates solutions, with data mining algorithms providing useful insights to cut costs and an alternative to specialised optimisation software.

In this project, we built a prototype of a simulation game revolving around a real optimisation problem of planners in a railway company: the game was designed to reflect a specific planning problem of our pilot customer Infrabel. Within the project, a group of simgamers played as if it were a typical simulation game and they had to find possible solutions to the planning problems. Post-processing data mining algorithms converted the generated solutions into useful insights for the planner, to avoid efforts and costs for the pilot customer Infrabel. Our simulation game also offered a competitive alternative to purpose-built optimisation software.
