The Cost of Non-Schengen

16017
TML examined the effect of the Schengen Treaty's cancellation on road transport, focusing on waiting times due to border controls. They calculated the number of border crossings and evaluated the average waiting time, with a time rating based on literature review.

The refugee crisis and international terrorist threat have triggered strong reactions from national governments within the EU and the Schengen area. In this study, TML examined the expected direct impact of the Schengen Treaty's cancellation on road transport, specifically as a result of waiting times due to border controls.

The evaluation started by calculating the estimated number of road border crossings in the Schengen area by passenger cars, buses, and trucks. It then took a measure of the average waiting time and attached a time rating to it based on a literature review.
