Design the multimodal infrastructural landscape Zelzate

From 2022 to 2023

In the municipality of Zelzate, several infrastructural and spatial developments of local and international importance come together. When working out possible future scenarios, TML was responsible for the traffic analyses and the construction of traffic scenarios.

Near the municipality of Zelzate, a lot of infrastructures to be (re)developed coincide with spatial developments: R4WO, pipeline infrastructure (CUST and others), rail projects (Rail Gent-Terneuzen, Train Gent-Terneuzen, Port railway line, etc.), canal adjustments, a new sunken Zelzate tunnel, the new Zelzate bridge, etc. These infrastructures, both the existing ones and plans for new ones, have a strong local and international importance.

By order of the Gent Canal Zone Project Office of the province of East Flanders, we worked out possible future scenarios from a spatial and traffic point of view. We did this together with Palmbout Urban Landscapes and with the support of Antea and Billie Donckers. In these scenarios, we situated all planned projects in the Zelzate area in both functional and spatial terms. Here we took into account pipelines, bicycle routes, car and freight traffic infrastructure, shipping, the rail network, and bus transport. This allowed us to describe the interaction between different projects and assess their impact in overall functioning.

TML was responsible for the traffic engineering analyses and the construction of the traffic engineering scenarios.
