Recharge and refuel: clean, smart and fair urban mobility in Slovakia

From 2022 to 2024
Slovakia is investing in more sustainable modes of transport, with support from the European Commission, to encourage the use of public transport and cycling and reduce car use. TML made an important contribution to this project by preparing a report on good practices for bicycle transport infrastructure and traffic calming, as well as strategic input for the cost-benefit analysis of an integrated tariff system.

After the transition in the 1990s, both public transport and cycling in Slovakia faced reduced interest from users and policy makers. This led to a decline in the number of users of both modes, while car use increased. In line with current EU priorities, including the European Green Deal and the Sustainable and Smart Mobility Strategy, Slovakia plans to invest in more sustainable modes of transport, with funding from the European Commission under Structural Reform Support (DG REFORM).

The overall objective of the project was to contribute to institutional, administrative, and growth-enhancing structural reforms in Slovakia. The project produced two main outputs:
  1. An approved action plan for an integrated transport and fare system, enabling multimodal public passenger transport in Slovakia with a single ticket. This action plan was supported by a cost-benefit analysis of different implementation scenarios.
  2. A report with recommendations for the development of bicycle infrastructure and traffic liveability measures.
TML was responsible for three components in this project: (i) a report on good practices in the development of bicycle transport infrastructure and traffic calming, (ii) strategic input and methodological support for the cost-benefit analysis (CBA) of the integrated fare system, and (iii) quality assurance.

The official report is available on the EU website.
