Vlaamse Waterweg nv manages the extensive network of waterways in Flanders, which provides a sustainable and efficient way of transporting goods and contributes to economic growth. TML examined the economic and social impact of their Strategic Plan 2030 and compared the results with the objectives of the Flemish Mobility Vision 2040, the Flemish Sustainable Development Strategy, and the Flemish Climate Adaptation Plan.
Flemish inland navigation plays a crucial role in Flanders' transport network. With an extensive network of rivers, canals, and waterways, Flanders offers an efficient and environmentally friendly way to transport goods. This promotes sustainable economic growth and reduces traffic congestion. Inland navigation is an important link in Flanders' multimodal transport system and has smooth connections with nearby foreign countries.
The Flemish Waterway nv manages these waterways and the land along them. Besides mobility, they also focus on water management and promoting life along the waterways, paying attention to liveability, recreation, and the environment.
However, the inland navigation sector faces significant challenges: think of growing freight transport and increasing pressure on infrastructure, but also climate-related issues. The sector needs to adapt to environmental requirements and the need for sustainable development. To address these challenges, The Flemish Waterway has developed the Strategic Plan 2030. This plan provides a forward-looking vision and was prepared with input from various stakeholders. It sets clear strategic goals and ambitions in the areas of economy, mobility, and water management.
With this study, TML aimed to quantify the wider impact of the Strategic Plan both economically and socially. In addition, we compared the impact of the plan with the priorities and objectives of the Flemish Mobility Vision 2040, the Flemish sustainable sevelopment strategy, and the Flemish climate adaptation plan.
