The HoPE project developed a platform for secure payments and smart multimodal trip planning in public transport. TML took over coordination of the project and developed business models and technology transfer, resulting in an integrated system that has been tested and validated in several European cities.

The HoPE (Holistic Personal public Eco-Mobility) project developed a platform for secure payments and smart multimodal trip planning. By developing this route planner of the future, the project enhances the role of public transport.

Transport & Mobility Leuven played a crucial role in the successful completion of this complex project, mainly by drawing on its specific expertise on ITS and its (leading) role within previous research-technology projects subsidised by the European Commission. TML took over coordination halfway through this project and was responsible for the work package around dissemination. In addition, our experts provided the necessary know-how on developing business models and our team played a key role in the crucial technological part of this project by transferring the MODUM technology.

In this technological European research project, we developed an open and user-friendly platform, enabling payment management with intelligent transport systems (ITS). Central to this was raising awareness of public transport and eco-mobility. The platform offered several additional services, including information around mobility, trip planning, mobile payments, and reservations.

HoPE is thus a fully integrated and validated system that provides an end solution that can be applied in any city. It provides a secure and accessible payment procedure for tickets and smart trip planning for travellers. For the latter, travellers can customise route advice according to their preferences, such as the cheapest, fastest, or most ecological route. The HoPE system was successfully set up, tested, and validated in three European cities (Coventry in the UK, Gipuzkoa and San Sebastian in the Basque Country, and Athens in Greece). It was also applied to a wide arsenal of local and regional transport assets.
