What influences choices when buying cars and vans in Flanders?

This study analyses how the purchase behaviour of Flemings can be steered towards greener vehicles, focusing on the influence of different factors and their elasticities with respect to mobility taxes. TML uses historical purchase data and discrete choice experiments, applying nested and mixed logit models to simulate the effects of mobility taxes or subsidies.

In this study, we investigate how and to what extent Flemings’ purchasing behaviour can be steered towards greener vehicles. In doing so, we answer the following research questions:
  • Which factors influence the purchase behaviour of Flemish people when choosing a car or van?
  • To what extent do these factors play a role in purchase decisions?
  • What are the elasticities of purchase decisions in relation to the different factors and how can they be taken into account in mobility taxes?

In our analysis, we distinguish between the purchasing behaviour of natural and legal persons and between new vehicles and used vehicles. Leased vehicles are examined separately. The empirical results are integrated into a simulation model used to simulate the effects of mobility taxes or subsidies. For this, we start from detailed past data on vehicle purchases in Flanders on the one hand, and from a discrete choice experiment with a representative sample in Flanders on the other. In addition, we use nested and mixed logit models.
