Commissioned by the European Cyclists' Federation, TML mapped the number of full-time equivalent jobs in the European cycling sector. The study covered traditional sectors such as bicycle sales and repair but also construction and bicycle tourism, and compared the job intensity of the cycling sector with other sectors.
The European Cyclists' Federation (ECF) aims to promote cycling as a sustainable and healthy means of transport and recreation. It therefore organises various activities and events, including research activities. This study on the potential of cycling as a driver for green job creation in Europe supported the federation's activities with national and international governments.
TML estimated the number of (full-time equivalent) jobs in the European cycling sector today. In this study, the cycling sector includes traditional sectors such as trade and repair of bicycles, but also less traditional cycling sectors such as construction (construction of cycle tracks) and cycle tourism. In addition, we also made a rough estimate of jobs in bicycle services; this includes bicycle sharing systems and bicycle couriers. In addition, we compared the job intensity (number of jobs per unit of added value) of the cycling sector with other sectors.
