Dynamic Traffic Model Antwerp

From 2017 to 2018
In collaboration with Technum and Grontmij, TML developed a macroscopic dynamic traffic model for the Antwerp region, which simulates traffic jams and travel times more realistically than classical static models. TML undertook the project management, calibrated the model, and modelled scenarios, and updated the model in a follow-up project to the base year 2019.

Commissioned by the Traffic Models Team of MOW, the THV TML-Technum-Grontmij created a macroscopic dynamic traffic model (MDVM) of the Antwerp region. Such a dynamic model can simulate traffic jams and travel times much more realistically than classical static models. In addition, the lower computation time allows large-scale analyses at network level, as opposed to micro-simulations.

This MDVM for Antwerp is the first of its kind in Flanders. The model can be used for scenario analyses in roadworks or infrastructure projects and to support dynamic traffic management. It is a macroscopic traffic model for car and freight traffic: traffic is simulated as aggregated flows, as opposed to microscopic simulations. The traffic model is dynamic, meaning that congestion and travel times fluctuate over time, as they do in reality (unlike static traffic models).

From its many years of academic experience in macroscopic dynamic traffic modelling, TML was responsible for project management. In addition, TML was responsible for calibrating the traffic model with the available data (counts, travel times, etc.). This included specific attention to the correct modelling of traffic jams. TML also led the second and third parts of the project, in particular the modelling of scenarios and updating of the existing situation.

In a follow-up project (support macroscopic dynamic traffic models), TML updated the MDVM for Antwerp to a new base year (2019). This traffic model is used by the Traffic Models Team to calculate scenarios on behalf of various applicants (including AWV and Lantis).
