TML, together with TNO, looked at 54 explorations of the future with scenarios from our neighbouring countries, 10 of which were very thorough.
The Flemish government, Department of Mobility and Public Works, wishes to develop a policy framework for the distant future (2030 to 2050) in which all transportation modes have their place. Future studies with scenarios can support this policy framework. They allow an informed understanding of the uncertain future of a complex system such as the traffic and transport system. TML, together with TNO, looked at 54 foresight studies with scenarios from our neighbouring countries, ten of which were very thorough.
Based on the comparative study and after analysing the available data, TML concluded that a foresight study with scenarios is possible in Flanders and will take two years to develop. The main building blocks for such a foresight are the variables that influence the mobility system, an instrument to quantify the scenarios, and a process to build the scenarios.
