Ottenburg wants to make the village centre safer and car-free with a master plan that puts pedestrians and cyclists first. TML provided mobility advice and collaborated on a sustainable mobility vision, keeping in mind the connection with supra-local traffic structures.
Ottenburg, a sub-municipality of Huldenberg, is a rural church village between Leuven, Brussels and Wavre. It is a green, quiet place to live, cycle and walk. All amenities are within walking or cycling distance, but the village centre is bisected by Leuvensebaan, a municipal road that attracts a lot of supra-local traffic. The volume of traffic and the lack of crossings create an unsafe situation.
This study brought together the assets of the village centre in a coherent and feasible master plan, aiming to create a car-free public space tailored to pedestrians and cyclists. To this end, the speed regime, parking strategy, and circulation, among others, needed to be scrutinised. The spatial development vision was then worked out in close consultation with residents.
In an initial exploratory phase, the Ottenburg project area was analysed, and the assets and mobility issues of the village centre were identified. Then we studied various concepts and developed them further. The programming, the overall spatial structure, the mobility issues, and the green-blue potential were weighed up together, after which a prototype was drawn up. This was further developed into a final design. We then converted all the material into a working instrument for policy. In all this, TML made proposals and provided advice to address the mobility issues in this master plan. In doing so, we started from a contemporary, sustainable mobility vision, considering the supra-local mobility structures.
