Traffic engineering and technical study of a traffic management system for the city of Mechelen

From 2021 to 2024
TML is leading a traffic engineering and technical study to expand the traffic guidance system in Mechelen, aimed at developing a dynamic system that informs and guides drivers in real time. The new system should contribute to efficient traffic flows and provide alternative routes in case of problems.
The city of Mechelen already offers dynamic parking guidance but wishes to expand this into a full traffic guidance system, so that road users are informed of the current traffic situation in the city. This system should be able to direct traffic flow along an alternative route in case of serious problems on certain road sections, as well as display alternative ways to reach the city centre by public transport or bicycle. We guided the city in upgrading and renewing the current system with an up-to-date digital system. This allows the city to monitor occupancy in underground and above-ground parking spaces and direct local destination traffic to these parking spaces in a staggered, socially desirable manner. In addition, the proposed system can adequately respond to emergencies and adaptively influence traffic flows positively.
In the first part of this study, we conducted a comprehensive traffic engineering and technical study. We identified the strengths and weaknesses of the current system, together with the architecture and implantation of the renewed dynamic traffic control system. In doing so, we took into account the current state of the system and the circulation plan under development. We proposed a recipe of suitable technologies based on the market survey and compared the players in the market to arrive at a market-based tender in consultation with the client. We then supported the client during the award negotiations and implementation phase.
TML took the lead in this project and was supported by partners Tractebel and MORE LION. We are thus building a strong reputation in similar assignments - such as a traffic guidance system in Leuven and a traffic guidance study in Vilvoorde - where city centres are coming under increasing pressure due to increasing mobility. We offer solution-oriented study work and a design of a state-of-the-art traffic guidance system tailored to each city centre.
