Redesigning the A12 as a primary road

From 2020 to 2024
The Flemish Government wishes to reconfigure the A12 according to its status as a primary road, where safety and traffic flow can be improved for all modes. TML collaborated on the analysis of various alternatives for the layout of the A12 and the N177 parallel road, to arrive at a permit application for the preferred alternative.

There are currently five level junctions on the A12 between Wilrijk and Boom that score highly in the list of dangerous junctions. These five cause considerable delays and thus cut-through traffic in the area and on the N177 parallel road. Moreover, the A12 forms a strong barrier for soft road users and the facilities along the A12 do not meet requirements either. Finally, the A12 should play an important role in the future public transport network according to Route Plan 2030.

Previous studies have already reached the consensus that the A12 will cross the junctions at grade by means of an insleuving or tunnel(s). A project environmental impact report was prepared in which various alternatives for the realignment were weighed up to arrive at a permit application for the preferred alternative.

In a first part, the different alternatives were elaborated with ample attention to stakeholder and neighbourhood participation (2021). In the next phase, we compared the alternatives using a project EIA (2022). In March 2024, the Flemish government ratified alternative A (with three short tunnels). This alternative is now being further elaborated to arrive at an environmental permit application.

TML is jointly responsible for the study of the traffic flow in the various variants and for the further study of the preferred alternative. In doing so, we analyse in detail the various intersections and the exchange between the different routes and take the lead for the traffic simulations at macro and micro level.
