Traffic Scout

We develop a simplified traffic model that uses open data (OpenStreetMap, Telraam, etc.) to provide insight into current mobility patterns and allows mobility scenarios to be simulated intuitively in a traffic scout: Traffic Scout. The scenarios range from a change of speed regime and the (temporary) closure of a street to the development of a full circulation plan.

We often get questions about the effects of local mobility interventions. What is the best diversion route during roadworks? What is the effect on traffic flow? How much creeping traffic is there through a neighbourhood and how do we possibly reduce it? Two problems often arise with such questions: on the one hand, there is little or no data available about the area to be investigated, and on the other, there are no suitable tools to quickly quantify the effect of mobility interventions.

Thanks to our close cooperation with Rear Window and the Telraam platform, this first problem has largely been overcome. For this, we will work with citizens to collect data at low cost in a citizen science context.
The second problem requires more work. Although traffic models exist, they are often complex to use, budget-heavy, and not suitable for making statements about local roads. To solve this, we offer Traffic Scout as a service. This is a traffic model for motorised and bicycle traffic that, based on open data, allows anyone to easily simulate scenarios themselves.

Traffic Scout is a combination of an interactive map with a simulation tool. These provide insights into local traffic flows for evaluating different mobility interventions. Our tool has an intuitive user interface so that professionals without great technical baggage can use it to quantify and understand the impact of interventions. Here, we provide a broad arsenal of tools to simulate, evaluate, and visualise various mobility measures.
